TUTORIAL/INSTRUCTION

PRACTICAL/PROCESS
Week 11 Overview:
Focus: PART 2 on Design Direction

PART 2 SELF-TITLED
For this week we had to develop our sketches based on our concepts and create the digital poster on the chosen sketch.

SKETCHES

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION:
Since there was 2 concepts for the poster, I followed the description that I written down and started on my sketching.

Paragraph 1: What is the concept behind it?
There's 2 concepts:
1) The concept behind it is from my daily experience being as a Creative Media student since I have always been making new ideas and designing. I wanted to show this process where all of my ideas and creativity flow into an object and changing it into something cute and something towards to my art style. Surrounding me and my creation are multiple eyes, symbolizing people that judge my work. This shows what it feels like to be an artist, where every creation can be judged.

2) The concept behind this second version is inspired by the reality of being in the art community , where creativity is always shaped by judgement and expectations. The hands reaching in represent the pressure and control from critics. It's to show how competitive and harsh the creative field can be. In the middle there's me with a hollow face that is filled with clouds, symbolizing unlimited ideas and thoughts that defined who I am. The repeated sheets of paper represent the constant cycle of changing my art whenever criticism happened. Altogether, the design shows the struggle of having to be true to ourselves when navigating in a world full of opinions.

I also searched for some inspiration on how to sketch each concept. Here are some of the inspirations:

IDEATION:
Based on the inspirations and the concept description, I started on my sketches. I used Procreate for the sketches.

DIGITAL POSTER EDITING
Based on my knowledge from learning editing in the lecture, tutorials and practical I have to edit the digital poster on the chosen sketch.

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION:
The chosen sketch is sketch 1.

Figure 11. Chosen sketch 1

The lecturer advised me to choose Sketch 1 since it is more doable for the animation later on. He also told me that I needed to have a good mood kind of vibes to reflect the concept brief.

From this sketch, I had to take pictures and use Photoshop to edit my poster.

IDEATION:
The first thing I had to do was to take a pictures and take images from Pinterest. I used my phone camera to take the picture and used the natural light for the lighting.

EDITING:
To do the Digital Poster, I rewatched back some of the tutorial video that the lecturer sent and followed some of the steps for this task specifically.

1) Background Setting

To create the background setting, I used the tool called Colour Fill to make the whole background black and place my background image onto another layer on top of the black fill.

2) Select and Mask
From the pictures I've taken, I put all of them into the artboard. Then, I used the Select and Mask tool to remove the background for all of them.

3) Image Arrangement
The eyes are arranged properly to create a radial composition and the eye apple image is placed on top of the apple.

Figure 19. Process picture #4

4) Shadows
I used the Brush tool in the colour Black and Grey to make the shadows of the eye apple image. I also change the opacity to 60% then add Gaussian Blur to it to make it not too harsh.

5) Pen Tool Graphic
I used the Pen Tool to create messy path lines around my outline to add contrast. Then I used the colour fill option to fill in the path shape with white colour.

6) Boarder Frame
I used the Rectangular Marquee Tool to make rectangular shapes around the artboard to make a frame. Then colour fill it with the colour black using the colour fill option.

7) Flow Lines

Then, I used the Brush tool to make red lines flow. The specifically used the brush called Kyle’ s Real Oils Round Flex Wet to make the flow lines. The size of the brush is 50px.

8) Finished
Any errors or tiny adjustments is made and now it is finished.

FEEDBACK
I had 2 other more variants of the poster which are:
1) The blurred with shadow on the flow lines

2) Different line flow arrangement

From all of my 3 variants that I have made about this poster, the lecturer chose this one:

Artists Statement
This artwork is inspired by my life as a Creative Media student, where creating ideas is a part of my daily routine. I wanted to show how my thoughts and creativity flow into the things I make, turning simple ideas into something that is aligned to my art style. The eyes around the artwork represent the people who watch and judge the things I create. This symbolizes what it feels like to be an artist, where every piece we made is commented and critiqued. The artwork shows the joy of creating and the pressure of being seen.

REFLECTION
Experience
Sketching was the easiest part since the ideas were already clear, but creating the digital poster was much more challenging. Many of the images I tried didn't match well and the layout felt unbalanced which made me redo the work several times. After revisiting the previous lectures, I planned my composition more carefully and finally achieve a result that I was satisfied with. This task also made me realize how much faster I've become with editing thank to the previous assignments.

Observations
I noticed that even small changes in placement or the wrong image choice can completely affect the outcome of a poster. Proper arrangement and selecting visuals that match the concept are really important to make the design look organized and intentional

Findings
From this task, I learned that good design needs planning, patience and trial and error. Reviewing design principles helped guide my decisions and this task improved my understanding of layout, composition and how to refined a digital artwork nicely.
