Week 9
Realism Versus Surrealism
What is Realism?
Realism focuses on the things exactly as they are in real life. It avoids anything exaggerated. It focuses on normal everyday subjects without adding anything strange or unusual.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism is like Realism but with a twist. It mixes real things with dreamlike or impossible ideas. It usually look like something from a dream or imagination, not in real life.

Image manipulation using Digital Photography
Image manipulation using digital photography allows us to transform simple photos into something imaginative and unexpected. With tools in Photoshop, we can combine different images, layer elements and create surreal artworks that is interesting. This activity allows our creativity to experiment with unusual and imaginative ideas.
WHAT I'VE LEARNED IN WEEK 9 LECTURE:
From this week's lecture, I learned the difference between Realism and Surrealism. Realism focuses on showing things how they are in real life, while Surrealism allows us to combine real things with imaginative elements. I also learned how digital image manipulation can turn our simple photos into something creative and unexpected. With Photoshop tools, we can mix, layer and really create anything. This lecture made me realize how creativity and imagination can be explore through the power of editing and combining photography.

TUTORIAL/INSTRUCTION
PRACTICAL/PROCESS
Week 9 Overview:
Focus: Continuation Editing of the Conceptual Photo Manipulation
CONTINUATION EDITING CONCEPTUAL PHOTO MANIPUATION
Based on Week 8, I have already edited through half of the process, now its time to continue.
RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION:
Last week (Week 8) I had made some progress on the editing for the Conceptual Photo Manipulation. I stopped at the part where I added the Hard Light filter and adjusting the strawberry.
Here is the last week result:
For this week, I need to continue editing until I am finished with the work. I left off at Step 5, now its time to continue to Step 6.
IDEATION:
6) Shadows
I used the Brush tool in the colour Black to make the shadows. I changed the opacity to 60% then add Gaussian Blur to it to make it not too harsh.
7) Highlights
I used the Brush tool and used a light yellow colour for the highlights then the opacity to 60% then add Gaussian Blur to it to make it softer.
8) Background colour
Towards the end, I change the background colour into a bright pink.
9) Added text
The poster text is added, I used Segoe UI Light and Segoe UI Bold.

The shadow needed to be less visible and the hand needed to be in the picture. Then change the background colour and add a text to show that it is really a poster.

Finished artwork, Strawberry Lollipop
Description
Most lollipops come in many different flavours, with the red ones often associated with strawberries. This inspired the idea of creating a real strawberry lollipop but made using an actual strawberry as the candy instead of the normal artificial flavouring. It’s fresh and all-natural, with no additives or preservatives. It's just pure fruit.
REFLECTION
Experience
This task was slightly more challenging compared to the previous ones because I still haven't really fully grasped the tools in Photoshop. I had to rewatch the tutorial videos several times to understand the steps properly. Another difficulty was taking the photos, since the lighting in my room wasn't ideal, so I had to make the best use of what I had. Thankfully, everything worked out in the end.
Observations
Through this task, I realized how much lighting and colour affect the overall outcome of the edited image. Even with a small change can really change the mood and realism of the photo. I also observed that combining two different images requires careful attention to blending and texture so that they look good together.
Findings
By working on this task, I learned that small details can really make a difference in digital editing. For example before adding the highlights to the strawberry, the image looked dull and flat. After adjusting the lighting and adding the highlights, it made it so much more realistic and lively.
