LECTURES
Week 8
Week 8 was an Independent Learning Week (ILW) so there was no lecture.
For this week, the lecturer instructed us to continue with our work on the Conceptual Photo Manipulation task.

TUTORIAL/INSTRUCTION

PRACTICAL/PROCESS
Week 8 Overview:
Focus: Editing for the Conceptual Photo Manipulation

EDITING CONCEPTUAL PHOTO MANIPUATION
Based on Week 7 blog post, the lecturer chose The Strawberry Lollipop as my Conceptual Photo Manipulation. He told us to take a picture of each of the items and edit it.

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION:
Last week (Week 7) I have already taken pictures for my Conceptual Photo Manipulation. I used my DJI Pocket 2 camera since it has a gimbal that helps to stabilize the camera so I can get better pictures.

These was the pictures that was chosen to be edited:

Figure 1. Strawberry picture #3

Figure 2. Lollipop picture #2

From these two pictures, I added them into Photoshop and started to do the editing.

IDEATION:
EDITING:
To do the Conceptual Photo Manipulation, I rewatched back some of the tutorial video that the lecturer sent and followed some of the steps for this task specifically.

1) Select and Mask
The first thing I did was placed all the pictures I took into the artboard and used the Select and Mask tool to only grab the subjects which are the lollipop, the strawberry and the leaf.

2) Curve tool and lighting adjustments
I used the Curve tool to change the lighting of the picture of the lollipop to make it brighter.

3) Clipping Mask
From there, I put the strawberry on top of the lollipop picture and used the Clipping Mask tool so that the circular of the lollipop is a strawberry.

4) Adding the leaf
I used the Select and Mask tool again to select the leaf part only and placed it on top of the lollipop picture.

5) Filters and adjustments
I added the filter called Hard Light onto the strawberry so that the strawberry takes the shape and curves of the lollipop and would look more visible and real.

This is the end progress for now, will continue the editing on Week 8.

END PROGRESS FOR EDITING:

REFLECTION
Experience
For this task, the editing process was quite challenging at the beginning since I am still new to Photoshop. However, rewatching the tutorial videos that the lecturer provided help me understand the steps betters and I slowly become more confident with each try. Through these past few weeks, I realized that editing is really powerful, with enough adjustment and refinement, the strawberry really looked like part of the lollipop like it was actually real. Seeing that transformation made me more interested in improving my editing skills.

I was also glad that Photoshop has may tools that helped enhance my photos. My original pictures were quite dark because of the bad lighting, but by adjusting the brightness, highlights and shadows, the final results turned out much better, This made me appreciate how much editing can fix a picture.

Observations
While working on this task, I noticed how much lighting affects the whole picture. Even with a good camera, the lack of good lighting made the photo look dull. But with editing, it can help make the picture look better. I observed that adding highlights, shadows and some colour balance would really enhance the picture to look realistic.

Findings
From this task, I learned that a good photo editing really relies on patience and attention to detail. Even simple adjustments can completely change the look and feel of the final image. I also realized that consistent practice is what really help build confidence when working in Photoshop. Lastly, I found out that good end results come form the combination of a proper photography, good editing and the understanding on how to use the tools effectively.
