LECTURES
Week 2
Introduction to Basic Composition

6 Compositions:
1) Focal Point -
helps viewer's eyes to naturally settle on the important/main pieces of the design first.

2) Scale & Hierarchy - help to communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements (also the difference of sizes)

3) Balance - Each element has a weight (smaller, less weight and larger, bigger weight) Asymmetrical balance is important.

Figure 3. Balance composition example

4) White Space - The empty space to balance up the main focus of composition, helps the design to breathe. (don't do too crowded)

5) Rule of Thirds - Dividing an image into thirds using two horizontal and two vertical lines, with four intersection points. Arrange it well then will produce a natural image.

6) Golden Ratio - A mathematical ratio. Promotes organic and natural looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to eye.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED IN WEEK 2 LECTURE:
From this week's lecture, I learned about the six basic types of composition that help create visually appealing artwork such as Focal Point, Scale and Hierarchy, Balance, White Space, Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio. Each composition plays an important role in guiding the viewer's eye and organizing the elements in a design. By understanding these composition helps in making a stronger, more balanced designs.

TUTORIAL/INSTRUCTION

PRACTICAL/PROCESS
Week 2 Overview:
Focus: Physical Collages

PHYSICAL COLLAGE
For this assignment, we were required to create 3 collages. Before we started anything, we learned about 6 types of composition to help us build and layer our collages nicely. To add on, the lecturer provided a step by step video demonstration showing the process on how he made his collage.

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION:
To begin the process, some collage inspiration was taken from Pinterest. Some examples were collected to explore different composition styles, theme and overall visual look.

The selected inspirations are all leaning towards to multiple layers and either colourful theme or a single colour palettes. In addition, some includes geometrical or organic cut out shapes.

IDEATION: After gathering inspiration, various materials such as books, newspapers, magazines and small printed papers were collected for the collage.

After
selecting some prints and pictures that are interesting and appealing, the cut outs were arrange to from a visual balance and pleasing composition. Multiple prototype trials were explored to test different arrangements and layering techniques.

After looking through the pictures and prints, asking the lecturer for some improvements, looking at more inspirations and reading back the types of composition. I have made 3 main collages.

Figure 13. Physical collage #1

The first collage uses the scale and hierarchy composition. This composition focuses on the relationship between the sizes and the scale of each image. Each image were carefully arranged so that the viewer's eye is guided from the largest image to the medium size image and then to the smallest. Overall, this composition shows a sense of balance among the colourful images used.

Figure 15. The rule of third explanation

For the second collage, the rule of thirds was used for the composition. The cat's face is placed near the upper third of the frame that makes the viewer's eyes drawn naturally. The hand is placed at the lower third which adds to the stability of the composition, while the colourful circles and stars fills around the image that balance the space. By using the rule of thirds, it create movement and visual uniqueness.

Figure 16. Physical collage #3

The last collage uses asymmetrical balance composition by putting the frog image on the right side as the focal point, while the house and colourful shapes are on the left that helps to visually balance the weight. The large leaf at the top and the bright yellow burst helps to lead the viewer's eyes from one side to the other side of the collage. The overall composition still creates a sense of harmony and movement, making the whole collage feel balanced.

FEEDBACK
The lecturer's feedback was to try to create a composition that shows hierarchy by using shapes of different sizes, rather than keeping it all the same size. Also, explore other composition styles to experiment with different image arrangements.

FINAL OUTCOME
From all of these collages we had to make a concept and a story behind it. My main theme is about the life's chaos and beauty.

TITLE: Beautiful Chaos
Life can be chaotic and unpredictable, but within it, there's colours, opportunity and growth. Every experience we have, good or bad, shapes who we are as a person. The collage represents how this chaos builds our story and characters over time. After that, the lecturer chose 1 collage that he liked. Chosen collage:

REFLECTION
Experience
In week 2, I learned quite a lot about composition and how it play an important role in making any artworks visually appealing. The lecturer emphasized that composition is the foundation of a good design and from that it really helped me understand its importance. Creating my own physical collage was quite therapeutic, cutting out shapes and arranging images felt enjoyable and hands on which I like.

Observations
One of the main challenges I faced was choosing suitable images for my collage. The magazine and newspapers I had were mostly about economics of the world, so it took me some time to find images that matched with my chosen theme. But, in the end I managed to find enough visuals to make my collages work.

Findings
From this exercise, I learned that even though working digitally can be efficient, doing physical work like cutting and pasting the images gives a different sense of satisfaction for me. It made me appreciate the process of building a composition by hand and really understand how much thought that goes into making artworks.
